Experiencing Park Plaza Zirakpur

What makes this property a comfortable stay.

 Park Plaza is a Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group brand managed by Sarovar Hotels & Resorts in India. Well, as we measure quality by the parent company’s standards, this is the right place to expect it. Welcomed with a smile at Park Plaza Zirakpur for the two-day stay, we were introduced to the brand’s vision and execution.

There were some surprises in store when we saw the property. I had definitely not expected a multi-cuisine restaurant, large banqueting facilities and an open air swimming pool. The Punjab I knew from my teens loved the traditional and an indoor swimming pool was what I had envisaged. But this pool is covered at night, has a filtration system and cleaned every four to six weeks, as I came to know later.

The European fare was also not the preferred palate of the hefty Punjabis, who loved their Whisky, Butter Chicken and Butter Naan. And these are still the favourites, say the General Manager Michael G. Singh and Executive Chef Raman Preet Singh Ahluwalia, along with Dal Makhni.

With a large, comfortable seating, this is a restaurant to enjoy a variety of food. There is a bakery, bar and all kinds of food. What I appreciated was that the Chef had crafted a menu especially for us. The lunch we got was a very European fare and had fruit-based flavours. Spread over four courses, the servings were not very huge, the presentation excellent and the taste light and fresh. It was a meal full of surprises and good conversations.

Though Chef Ahluwalia is a Punjabi, he loves to create fusions and healthy fusions. So, the Caramelized Pears and Gauva, Corn and Cheese Cannelloni were simply melt-in-the-mouth. In the dessert, my vote went for the Baked Yogurt.

Essence, Park Plaza Zirakpur, Chandigarh, IndiaLunch on Day 2 was completely different. This was green Pan Asian fare with lots of exotic veggies. Between sips of Vietnamese Pho Chay and bites of Exotic Vegetables in Thai Red Curry and Bean Sprout Fried Rice, the Chef educated us on the use of different oils. He is among the few who uses mustard oil at home, even now. And recommended the traditional cooking techniques and oils as the healthier options. Packed and processed foods are a no-no! And the meal ended on a really happy note with Date and Nut Cigars.

Well, this restaurant is for those who love the traditional fare, right from the street foods of Lahore to the thalis of modern Punjab. There’s a lot of butter and ghee and pickles and papads. Different kinds of rotis and raitas mingle as families and friends gather for a grand time out. The menu has around 40 dishes.

So, the Aloo Wadi has the famous spicy Wadi from Amritsar, as I was told by GM Michael G. Singh. Dal Makhni and Butter Chicken are cooked the traditional way. And I loved the Missi Roti.

The chandeliers are eye-catching and the place is very popular for those celebrating special occasions, says Singh.

Free Spirit: Just Let Go
This bar has an eclectic mix of drinks and snacks. So you can take your pick from an Indian or international spirit, mocktails and cocktails.

Spa, Salon and Gym
There is a spa and a salon to make you look as beautiful as ever with an offer of many kinds of therapies. The gym also has a massage chair, which everyone said was quite amazing.

MICE and Wedding
The hotel has gained a reputation for being a good wedding destination, as between the open air huge lawn and board room space, it can easily accommodate up to 3,000 guests. The hotel offers customised services and menus. There is even a small lounge for private meetings, which needs to be booked in advance.

Rooms
There is the Presidential suite, Deluxe and Superior rooms, in total 104. There is even a smoking floor, so it’s best to state your preference in advance for it takes more than two days to remove the smell of smoke from the non-smoking rooms, informs Singh.

Green Practices

  • The sensor lights in the passages, which saves electricity.
  • Changing the linen only if required, of course with guests’ consent.
  • Air conditioning comes on 90 minutes before the conference or banquet is to begin.

Corporate Social Responsibility

  • Swachch Bharat Abhiyan where the staff went on a cleaning drive in the neighbourhood.
