The water of life, as whiskey is called in Gaelic, drunk with friends in the soft environs of this Delhi-based bar with a view of the historic Qutub Minar.

It’s difficult to choose which bar to enjoy a private evening with close friends in Delhi. Away from the humdrum is DRAMZ Whiskey and Bar Lounge near the famous Qutub Minar. Like many, I didn’t know that dram is actually a unit of measurement and one dram is equal to 30ml, until enlightened by the Director Sunil Aggarwal.
Normally, whiskey is a drink enjoyed by people who have developed a taste for spirits. And for the classy and the stylish, the Old English classic décor would have a different appeal, matching the aromas of the different whiskies on offer. Spread over three floors, I loved the terrace sitting arrangement as it offers a wonderful view of the tall Qutab Minar.
What we enjoyed was a special six course meal prepared by the Head Chef Pankaj Sharma and it was a lesson in pairing single malt with Indian food. The meal began with a smoked tomato soup with bharwa aaloo. A point not to be missed is that almost all the herbs used in the restaurant kitchen are home-grown.
After the soup, came some apple with home-grown arugula, smoked cheddar and Himalayan honey paired with Clynelish 14 which had a citrus taste. Next was baked sea bass with olives, tomato and lime foam and the marination of seabass included some
Indian spices like coriander, citric acid, olives, cumin, garlic and olive oil. This was offered with spicy and strong Oban14, followed by baby herbs which consisted of leaves of peas and radish with mint and palate cleanser cucumber sorbet.
Main course was bhuna gosht, beautifully presented on a black tawa kind of a plate with lachcha prantha, paired with little smoky and sweet Balvenie 12. Coming from foodie city Amritsar, this was not so much suited to my palate. But the first part of the dinner was a treat. And it ended as a treat too with hazelnut ice cream which had brownie crumbs and was paired with sweet and a bit fruity Singleton of Glenord 12.
An evening of learning about whiskies and its blend with different kinds of dishes—well spent with a few at a classy lounge.
