Not for the insane, this restaurant in Delhi’s posh GKI market is where healthy greens, fresh fruits and chilli cocktails find their way to the table in many forms

Why is Mexican the new rage in India? No one knows! Maybe, just maybe the fact that Mexicans like chilli just as Indians do. But at Depot 48, where it’s a mix of American and Mexican on the menu, it’s more about comfort. But what is Depot and why 48? Nothing to do with the number of dishes on the menu, 48 is the pin code of that area and depot is where things are stored. Here in store for you are yummy sliders, quesadillas, tacos and homemade tortilla chips, dips as fresh as the promise made by co-owner Vikas Narula and an interesting chilli cocktail named after his sister Monika!
The décor is quiet and acoustic is the mantra, as the co-owner Girjashanker Vohra has a degree in film sound, is a BAFTA nominated producer and a tenor by training. Weekends are all about performances and live gigs.
What catches your eye is that there is a lot of attention on serving and freshness. An engineer and marketing executive-turned-restaurateur Narula interned under the famous Ritu Dalmia and carries that training even now. “I always call her boss, even when I SMS her!” smiles Narula. Some ingredients are imported to keep the authentic taste, which is why you might find the price points on the higher side. And which is why the ones with only pocket money might not be sitting next on the table next to you.
The unforgettable: Jackfruit burger, Mushroom and quinoa burger, Quinoa salad! These are fresh, innovative and a new take on vegetables.
Killer drink: Chilli and vodka, named Monika; and the whisky-based cocktails.
You can’t miss: Classic, pomegranate and roasted pine nuts Guacamole
Though there is a dessert of the day, but winding up with waffles, even at night, is a good idea here. I liked the Chocolate Gianduja with caramelized nuts and they come with chocolate sauce and ice cream.
