The restored movie Shiraz: A Romance of India will tour four Indian cities as part of the UK/India 2017 Year of Culture. Shiraz tells the love story of the 17th century princess who inspired the construction of the Taj Mahal. Shiraz was adapted from Niranjan Pal’s play, the first Indian playwright to have his work performed in the West End. Franz Osten’s silent Indian classic has been remastered by the conservation team at the BFI National Archive. The screening will be accompanied by live performance of a specially commissioned score by Grammy® -nominated leading contemporary Indian composer and sitar player, Anoushka Shankar and an orchestral ensemble.

Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr Sonal Mansingh’s Centre for Indian Classical Dances is bringing a dance performance titled ‘Divyalok’. It will have three episodes: Devi begins Creation (from Devi Puran), Kaaliya Mardan: Example of Pollution Control (from Bhagvat Puran) and Asura & the Enchantress: How to destroy EGO of those who want to destroy Creation (from Shiva Puran). It will feature Centre’s Repertory dancers with music by Shubhendra Rao, Saskia Rao and Ariane Gray Hubert.

The second edition of The Ahimsa Festival has festivities running across 18 days to create awareness about the power of compassion and living a cruelty free life. In two weeks more than 100 satellite events–film workshops, talks, webinars and seminars, treks, a run and cyclothon, potlucks–will be held across Mumbai. The festival will conclude with an Ahimsa Carnival.
