The group show is being held in collaboration with Art Magnum. ‘Rasas of Indian Art’ is an initiative to showcase how the Indian aesthetic theory of ‘rasas’ has been interpreted in the works of these artists. The works trace the journey of Indian artists both in the pre-independence and the post-independence era, giving a unique insight into how the Indian art scene has evolved.

Rasa, which in Sanskrit means essence, taste, flavour, and literally means sap or  juice, is an Indian concept of aesthetic flavour, an essential element of any work of visual art that can only be suggested, not described. Here, the rasas can be categorised into different human feelings such as delight, laughter, sorrow, anger, energy, fear, disgust, heroism, and astonishment. All of which may be recast in contemplative form as the various rasas: erotic, comic, pathetic, furious, heroic, terrible, odious, marvellous and quietist. These rasas comprise the components of aesthetic experience, which shall be on display in each and every artwork in the exhibition.
