We love Bollywood. And we never miss a chance to see our favourite actors on the big screen. While cinemas houses and entertainment zones are still shut due to COVID-19 pandemic, OTT platforms have turned out to be our saviours. Among my all-time favourite channels, ZZE5 has been showing some excellent movies and serials. And Ghoomketu is the latest ZEE5 original film that has caught my attention.
I have yet to see the movie, but the trailer promises lots of fun. Just the name Ghoomketu is so bewitching. It’s quite catchy and makes you wonder what Ghoomketu is. It turns out to be a name as the trailer progressed, played by the awesome Nawazuddin Siddiqui. An alumnus of the National School of Drama, he was worked in many critically acclaimed films. He is among the most versatile actors in the industry and all his movies are an amazing watch. I feel he manages to get the perfect expression for any situation.
And in this movie, we are going to see Anurag Kashyap in a different avatar—in the role of an inspector. The famous director, screenwriter, editor, has an amazing screen presence. The dialogues are sassy—Kashyap’s senior at the police station gives him strict instructions to find a small boy, threatening that if the work doesn’t get done, “transfer karwyungi jahan ghaas kya, ghoos bhi khane ko nahin milenge”.
The story is simple: Ghoomketu lives in a small town in Uttar Pradesh. His first love is writing and his dream is to be a famous scriptwriter in Bollywood. And then begins the drama.
The movie appears to be pacy as we see Ghoomketu sitting with his Santo Bua on the bed. There is a mosquito net around them. And he is narrating a ghost story to his bua who listens avidly, yet does not get scared at all. The comedy lies in the expressions and Ghoomketu’s style. The characterisation and portrayal look really super. The authenticity of the area comes alive in the surroundings, costumes, make-up and language. Ghoomketu, apparently, is old-school. He speaks perfect Hindi, doesn’t know English at all, and has never worked. At the age of 31, he lands in Mumbai, seeking a writer’s job in a newspaper.
Raghubir Yadav as Dadda is another super actor. Cute and bubbly Ragini Khanna as Janaki Devi adds zing to Ghoomketu’s story. Then there’s Richa Chadha as Pagaliya.
Housebound as most of us are, comedy is the best stress buster and more so when you have some of the best actors in the industry sharing the same screen. It’s also good to see some real places and realistic people, far from the unreal illusionary glamour that we see in most commercial cinema. A creative effort worth spending time on this lockdown. Create your own movie hall by keeping some popcorn and coke handy as you laugh it out for two hours.
ZEE5 is also available as an app.
